Typically, a clients’ needs are to supply electricity to specific appliances, such as the refrigerator, lighting, heating, etc. However, at this stunning La Jolla home, the client had requested that we design and install a solar + storage system that would allow the entire house to be powered during grid outages.
The Generac PWR Cell system had all the components and software within their architecture/ecosystem that allowed us to use (2) 200A automatic transfer switches (ATS), (2) PWR Cell 7.6kW inverters and (4) PWR Cell battery cabinets with +/-68 kW/hr. of storage capacity to achieve this goal. The main electrical panel on this project is rated at 400A 120/240 volt, however these electrical panels incorporate (2) 200A main breakers that feed two 200A sub-panels. By intercepting the 200A rated cables we could route these into the ATS devices without having to cut massive amounts of drywall within the home to re-route existing electrical cables feeding one of the 200A sub-panels on the other side of the house.
Also, with the addition of (4) SMM load management devices installed on the (3) AC compressors and (1) pool circuit feeder we could achieve what the client wanted with-in a reasonable budget.
Because of the large system size, the installation took place over the course of 7 days.
